Lets break the mould

At Digitalab, we know that you can’t underestimate the power of a truly exceptional image. The beauty of photography as an art form is in its diversity – with so many wonderful genres and so many utterly unique photographers out there, photography means many different things to many different people. Today, we’re meeting landscape photographer John Potter and finding out about the inspiration and drive behind his work, as well as his tools of choice.

Who inspired you to become a photographer?

Fay Godwin, Bill Brandt and Charlie Waite, when I was starting out in photography in the mid-eighties.

What is your all-time favourite photography shoot?

Sunset over the Isle of Rum from Laig Bay, The Isle of Eigg, Small Isles, Scotland, June 2014.

Why landscape and fine art photography?

I have been passionate about the countryside and nature since I was a young lad growing up in North Yorkshire, and have long since had a burning desire to share and express my passion through art, design and creative landscape photography.

What is your camera of choice and why?

First choice for landscape photography now is the Sony A7r together with Canon L series lenses.

What one piece of advice would you give to any aspiring photographer?

Re-visit favourite locations at different times of year and day, so that you can build up an intimate knowledge and understanding of how light can change and enhance the landscape.

Is there anything that you would love to photograph?

I have worked in Norway twice in the last three years and am very keen now to return much more often.
