At Digitalab, we know that you can’t underestimate the power of a truly exceptional image. The beauty of photography as an art form is in its diversity – with so many wonderful genres and so many utterly unique photographers out there, photography means many different things to many different people. That’s why we asked Dom and Liam from York Place Studios for one of their images and asked them a couple of questions to find out exactly how they fell in love with photography and what the two would say to any aspiring photographer hoping to make a career out of their passion.

Tell us a bit about this image and why you chose it to be featured?

We chose this photograph to be featured because it epitomises the feeling of carefree excitement we love so much at weddings. Taken at a Jewish wedding this image was one of the last we took that night; it was 12am and the guys decided to play a wild game where they literally jumped onto each others waiting arms and were carried along to the end of the line. It was definitely one of our favourite moments of the wedding season and, taken using just the available light in the room, we love the atmosphere encapsulated in the image and the ecstatic expression of the groom’s face. Our motto is to let the day happen without direction and we always aim for our couples to simply have the best time of their lives. This frame sums up that feeling and desire perfectly for us.

Which styles of photography most interest and inspire you in your work?

We are very much inspired by street photography and love to spend our spare time honing our portfolios and visiting new places. This year we have visited Paris and San Fran and next year we are excited to be going to New York together to shoot and to go on the Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb workshop for further inspiration and to kick start us into the new wedding season!

What one piece of advice would you give to any aspiring photographer?

Don’t follow the crowd, be the very best version of yourself without succumbing to the latest trends and going with the easy option. Don’t just try every editing filter you can lay your hands on (as tempting as it might be!), find your style organically and keep to a consistent look so that your couples or clients know what to expect and so that you are more memorable to others. Do look for outside inspiration but try not to limit yourself to just looking at other photographers in your field too much, instead look at films, artists, street, music, anything that stirs your creativity and excites you to bring these influences to your photography.
