Digitalab Featured Photographer: Laura Pearman

9th December 2013 by Alex Ingram

At Digitalab, we appreciate the power of photography, whether it’s personal or professional. We asked Laura Pearman for one of her images and posed a couple of questions to find out exactly what it is she loves about photography and what she’d say to any enthusiastic photographer hoping to make a career out of their passion.

Tell us a bit about this image and why you chose it to be featured.

I chose this image to be featured because it is the culmination of collaboration work of an array of North East businesses.  Working with Boutique Floral as my client, we created a range of floristry photography for promotional use.  Jesmond Dene House agreed to let us use their Grand Hall as a venue, local up and coming models chose to model.  Anh Mao provided Bridal Haute couture for the shoot, Paul Bryan Salon did hair and we had a local makeup artist.  All worked on a PR basis.  This work is now supporting many local businesses promote themselves, and the relationship with all businesses has solidified.

Which styles of photography most interest/inspire you?

Although my studio offers arguably “conventional” photography, I am most inspired by powerful thought provoking images.  My dream is to contribute to this wide genre through extensive travel photography and anything with a strong feminist context.

What one piece of advice would you give to an aspiring photographer?

It’s bloody hard work.  Question your passion carefully.  How much can you sacrifice to devote yourself to it?  Deciding whether you want it to be your main source of income with ultimately alter your relationship with the medium.  Im not saying for the better or worse, it just will alter.

If you are still certain it is a life for you, go for it 110%.  There are millions of aspiring photographers out there now (everyone with an Instagram account!) be prepared for a tough fight to succeed.
