Digitalab Featured Photographer: Lizzie Shepherd

18th February 2014 by Alex Ingram

At Digitalab, we appreciate the power of photography, whether it’s personal or professional. We asked Lizzie Shepherd for one of her images and posed a couple of questions to find out exactly what it is she loves about photography and what she’d say to any enthusiastic photographer hoping to make a career out of their passion.

Tell us a bit about this image and why you chose it to be featured.

This image is entitled ‘Mountain Puzzle, Moonland’ and is one of my favourite images from a wonderful trip to Ladakh (in Northern India) last year. The mountains and rock formations in Ladakh are second to none and this image really encapsulates the beauty of this unique landscape. The area is called Lamayuru, which means Moonland and this was on an evening walk with my husband. Incredible light was streaking across the mountains, revealing the incredible shapes and colours of the layers of ridges. Using a telephoto lens has compressed the view, creating a graphic, abstract image.

Which styles of photography most interest/inspire you?

I take inspiration from all kinds of photography, as well as from other forms of art and, of course, from the amazing world we live in. I don’t subscribe to a single style, either in my own photography or in my appreciation of others. Typically I prefer quieter images, ones that allow you a little time to take in what’s before you – these are normally the ones I find you want to keep coming back to.

What one piece of advice would you give to an aspiring photographer?

I think the most important advice I could give to an aspiring photographer is to work out what it is that inspires you – open your eyes, look for things that can translate that inspiration and help you to create unique photography that really conveys what you see and what you feel.
